The Republic of Kalmykia wants to cooperate with Vietnam in agriculture and help bring Vietnamese products to Europe, Kalmyk President Kirsan Iilyumzhinov said.

Kalmykia, a southern republic of the Russian Federation, is a large supplier of agricultural products for Russia and it can join forces with Vietnam to produce rice, the Vietnamese government cited Iilyumzhinov as saying.

Vietnam should consider Kalmykia as a gateway for its products to enter Russia and European countries, Iilyumzhinov said.

The statement was made during his meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, who visited Kalmykia from May 10-12.

The two countries can also work together in fertilizer production, Iilyumzhinov said. Kalmykia wants to receive a large number of Vietnamese garment workers and plans to zone an area as a kind of "Vietnam Town" for Vietnamese immigrants living and working in the area, he said.

President Triet said he appreciated all the proposals, noting that cooperating in agriculture and fertilizer production was a viable idea.
