The Kuwaiti consulate held a reception in Ho Chi Minh City Tuesday to celebrate that country's 53rd Independence Day and 23rd anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait.
The ceremony saw the participation of the consul general, Omar Suleiman Al-Qenai, vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee, Le Thanh Liem, and representatives of international organizations, leaders of business groups, entrepreneurs, and Kuwaiti expatriates.

Kuwait and Vietnam have enjoyed a close relationship since 1976 when the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development started to provide funds for a number of infrastructure projects in Vietnam.

The relationship has thrived since then, with mutual visits by leaders and high-ranking officials from the two countries.

Trade between the two countries has been developing well too, topping US$740 million last year.

Speaking at the ceremony,  Al-Qenai said he expects the figure to cross $1 billion in the years to come.

He called on “Vietnamese enterprises to take a more active role in conducting market surveys and aggressively introducing their products to the Kuwait market as this will open a very good opportunity for Kuwaiti buyers to directly see and assess Vietnamese products as well as exchange relevant information on the spot, and it will also help achieve stronger flow of goods and products to the markets of the two countries.”

Kuwait so provided grants to some provinces in the Mekong Delta to either purchase essential medical equipment or renovate clinics and social centers, and cooperated with the Office of the International Organization for Migration in HCMC to provide funds for building houses for victims of human trafficking in Tay Ninh Province.

Kuwait has also invested in Vietnam’s Nghi Son Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Complex which will start operation in 2017.

Liem congratulated the people and  government of Kuwait on the occasion of their national days.

“HCMC is always willing to support Kuwaiti entrepreneurs and businesses as well as other international ones when you come to invest in Vietnam,” he said.

“We believe that the bilateral and multi-faceted relations between Kuwait and Vietnam will develop constantly.”
