The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Monday signed a US$2 million project to improve afforestation skills of Vietnamese forestry officials.
Selected forestry managers and officers of 23 provinces will be trained based on a package derived from a previous project that JICA and the Vietnamese government signed in 2005.
The package has been designed for forestry personnel to acquire necessary skills to carry out feasibility studies and implement afforestation projects in Vietnam.
JICA has said that Vietnamese authorities can consider making the training package official to contribute to the country’s efforts to protect rapidly diminishing forest coverage.
Since 1992, when JICA first began operations in Vietnam, it has funded several projects in afforestation, forest management and nature conservation.
