Japan signed an agreement with Vietnam's Minister of Education and Training on Monday to extend funding for the training of Vietnamese officials in Japan as part of an ongoing program.

Since 2000, the program, known as Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS), has been sending young government officers from Vietnam to Japan's top universities to train and conduct research in areas such as urban development, transportation, agriculture and rural development.

The new agreement sets aside some US$4.1 million in funding from Japan for the project.

So far, nearly 300 young Vietnamese government officials have gone through the JDS program.
