Former Vietnam leader dies at 99

Vo Chi Cong, former chairman of the Council of State of Vietnam (equivalent to the President of Vietnam now), died aged 99 Thursday, Vietnam News Agency reported.

According to the announcement by the Communist Party Committee, Cong, who served in the nation's top position between 1987-1992, passed away at Ho Chi Minh City-based Thong Nhat Hospital after suffering critical illnesses.

The former high-ranking official's funeral with State honors was held on Saturday and Sunday with all entertainment activities suspended.

Born in the central province of Quang Nam, Cong served in many leadership positions in the government and the Party, including as Deputy Prime Minister from 1976-1981.
