EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht is expected to arrive at Hanoi on Monday for a two-day visit as part of a trip promoting trade with emerging Asian markets, according to an EU statement released on Thursday.

“Asia represents enormous growth potential for our exporters and I want to tap into new exporting and investment opportunities in this region,” the EU trade chief was quoted as saying.

Commissioner De Gucht is expected to hold talks with Vietnam’s highest government and party officials in discussion to how to further strengthen EU-Vietnam trade relations.

Bilaterial trade between EU-Vietnam amounted to about $US 16 billion and trade has increased 12 percent annually during the 2004-2008 period.

Vietnam is now EU’s fifth largest trading partner.

A representative from EU Vietnam says details of the commissioner’s visit in Vietnam won’t be released until his arrival.
