China's oil rig off Vietnam's coast: Aggressive acts at sea

China has used many vessels, including naval ships, and airplanes to protect the HY981 oil rig that it wrongfully deployed in Vietnam's 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone and on its continental shelf.
Chinese vessels have aggressively deterred Vietnam's sea law enforcement forces and fishermen from operating in the area. In one incident, a Chinese ship deliberately rammed and sunk a much smaller Vietnamese fishing boat.
