China has sent additional military ships into Vietnamese territorial waters to beef up security around its illegally-positioned mobile oil rig, Lieutenant Le Trung Thanh told an on-site Thanh Nien reporter.

Armed Chinese vessels, from corvettes to fast-attack missile ships, have repeatedly threatened Vietnamese patrol ships tasked with stopping the Haiyang Shiyou 981 rig from operating over Vietnam’s continental shelf, said Thanh, the captain of Vietnamese Coast Guard Ship 4033.
