Bauxite mining and processing in the Central Highlands region must be effective and cause no environmental damage, President Nguyen Minh Triet said Thursday.
The bauxite project was one of the nation’s priorities, exploiting natural resources to meet the needs of national development, industrialization and modernization, Triet told the Nhan Co Alumina Company in Dak Nong Province.
He said investors need to choose the best plan for the project and consider production of aluminum for export in the longer term, and not confine their activities to tapping and processing bauxite ore.
The Nhan Co aluminum project has a total investment capital of nearly VND12 trillion and a designed capacity of 650,000 tons a year, according to national radio VOV’s news website.
Vietnam has 5.4 billion tons of bauxite reserves, the world’s largest after Guinea and Australia, according to a US Geological Survey report published last year.
