Intelligence leaders of 10 ASEAN member countries convened the 9th ASEAN Military Intelligence Informal Meeting (AMIIM-9) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Tuesday, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Lieutenant General Luu Duc Huy, Director of the General Department of Military Intelligence under the Ministry of National Defense.
In his opening remarks, General Chea Tara, Deputy Commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) said that intelligence cooperation plays an important role in strengthening and consolidating relations between ASEAN member countries.
He stressed that dealing with hidden threats to regional peace and stability remains a common concern of ASEAN as a bloc and for each its members.
Speaking at the event, Lieut. Gen. Huy said that military intelligence agencies of the ASEAN countries should cooperate to improve their capacity to handle the security challenges facing each nation as well as the entire group.
Intelligence cooperation indicates the trust and solidarity within the bloc, so it should be prioritized, he said.
Participants at the meeting agreed on the theme for the upcoming 9th ASEAN Chiefs of Defense Forces Informal Meeting (ACDFIM-9), the draft joint statement of ACDFIM-9 and an agreement on future operations of ACDFIM-9.
