UN nuclear watchdog approves six projects for Vietnam
Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister Le Van Bang (L) shakes hands with Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei after their talk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi
The United Nations’ atomic agency has approved six projects valued at almost US$1.5 million for developing nuclear technology in Vietnam in the next two years, the state news agency reported Monday.

The information was released by Vietnam’s National Nuclear Energy Agency, which had a working session with Director-General Mohamed Elbaradei of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Hanoi, Vietnam News Agency said.

The national agency said the projects cover industrial application, nuclear analysis technology, radioactive solid waste management, improvement of legal capacity for nuclear agencies, medical application, and related human resource development.

The new projects were the follow-up to the 2001-06 program, under which the IAEA extended technical assistance to 24 projects on energy development with a total funding of over $2.55 million, the agency said.

In addition, the world watchdog provided $1.52 million in equipment for these projects.

IAEA Director-General ElBaradei was on a three-day visit to Vietnam to work on solutions to assist the country in developing atomic energy, review security, and ensure conformity to international treaties on atomic energy.

Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry announced last week that the country would sign with IAEA the Additional Protocol to Safeguards Agreement in pursuance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
