Typhoon Ketsana hit several provinces in the region on September 29, killing at least 163 people and injuring 629 others as well as destroying thousands of homes and devastating infrastructure and crops.
The paper, which is receiving donations from individuals and organizations to help the typhoon victims, has held a number of charity trips to the remote areas that suffered the worst to distribute provisions and support to the needy.
In coordination with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Thanh Nien has also launched a charity program to donate one million notebooks and one million pens for students in the region suffering the impacts of the typhoon.
Last week, one of the charity teams handed over 100,000 notebooks to nearly 10,000 students from remote villages along the Vu Gia River in Quang Nam Province’s Dai Loc District.
Other teams have forwarded notebooks and pens collected by the program to thousands of other students in the provinces of Kon Tum, Quang Ngai, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Binh over the past several days.
On October 13, the Italian Embassy in Vietnam announced that the Italian government had donated 200,000 euros ($298,000) to victims of Ketsana, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The donation will be forwarded by the Vietnam Red Cross to buy provisions for the victims and sponsor upgrades on the region’s flood warning systems and construction of houses in heavily affected areas.
