A Hanoi doctor who allegedly threw the body of a woman who died following a cosmetic surgery into a river faces two criminal charges, police said Thursday .
With the body not being found yet, Nguyen Manh Tuong, 40, faces charges of “violating regulations related to medical treatment” and “violating a corpse.” But the charges could change if it is found, they said.
Tuong faces up to seven years in jail.
He performed a breast enlargement surgery on Le Thi Thanh Huyen, 39, on October 19 at his Cat Tuong cosmetic surgery clinic.
He extracted fat from the woman’s stomach and pumped it into her breasts.
After the surgery finished at 4 p.m. Huyen began to develop convulsions and to foam at the mouth 30 minutes later.
At around 5:40 p.m. she turned purple and had to pulse or blood pressure.
Tuong said he gave her anti-shock injections and put her on a breathing machine, but to no avail.
He confessed that he told his employees to hide Huyen's files and himself took her body in his car to the river.
But he told his employees that he was taking her to a hospital for “emergency treatment.”
He told Dao Duy Khanh, 17, a security guard at the clinic, to dump Huyen’s motorbike and some other belongings somewhere else.
Khanh went with Tuong in the car to Thanh Tri Bridge, from where they admitted they threw the body into the Red River.
Huyen's husband found a receipt from the clinic and took it to the police.
They arrested Tuong on October 22. Khanh was also taken in for “violating a corpse.”
Despite strenuous efforts by her family, Huyen’s body has yet to be found.
According to the Hanoi Health Department, Tuong's clinic is not licensed for cosmetic surgery.
Authorities at the state-owned Bach Mai Hospital, where Tuong has worked for more than five years, said they did not know he had a private clinic.
The clinic has 20 employees and was run by Tuong along with his wife, also a doctor at the state-owned E Hospital.
Tuong specializes in traumatology and orthopedics.
According to an official from the Ho Chi Minh City Cosmetic Surgery Association, the technique of using fat from one's body to enlarge breasts is not allowed in Vietnam.
Huyen’s death has prompted authorities to inspect all clinics offering cosmetic surgery in the country.
