Vietnamese police arrested two Australian nationals for carrying 3.5 kilograms of heroin at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday.
After getting off a plane, J.N.A.J., 31, and K.C.G., 24, were detained when customs officers at the airport checked their luggage because they found the passengers suspicious.
They found 11 packs of heroin weighing 3.5 kilograms cleverly hidden in the passengers’ suitcases.
According to the officers, the heroin was deodorized to avoid being detected by dogs.
The pair was handed over to local anti-narcotics police for investigation.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. According to its Penal Code, those convicted of smuggling 100 grams of heroin or cocaine or 300 grams of other drugs can be sentenced to death.
