“Dangerous Liaisons,” a theatrical adaptation of the classic novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” by Choderlos De Laclos, will be staged in Ho Chi Minh City this month in English with Vietnamese supertitles.
The play is a tale of seduction, betrayal and revenge set in the morally corrupt world of the aristocracy of pre-revolutionary France. Made famous by the classic 1988 film of the same name, the novel has been adapted many times the world over.
“Dangerous Liaisons” is adapted by British playwright, screenwriter and film director Christopher Hampton who won the Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1988 for the screen adaptation of this play. Originally staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the play premiered in 1985 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, followed by a Broadway production in 1987 from Music Box Theater, and has seen many popular revivals since. The play has received many awards, including multiple Drama Desk Awards and a Tony.
“Dangerous Liaisons” stars Vietnamese actresses Nguyen Lan Phuong and Vu Pham Diem My alongside Dragonfly Theater veterans Belinda Shorland and Aaron Toronto.
The show is co-directed by American director/actor Aaron Toronto, and Nicaraguan actor/director Jaime Zúñiga, who burst onto the theater scene in Ho Chi Minh City in 2011 with his colorful presentation of “The Importance of Being Earnest” and won the hearts of children and adults alike with his modern and explosive reinterpretation of “The Little Prince” in 2012.
Aaron Toronto, who stars as the infamous Vicomte de Valmont, has been active in the Vietnamese film and television industry for nine years as director, film editor, actor and producer. Most recently, he produced and edited the feature film “Speak Low” in the US and is currently producing and starring in “The Prince”, a feature film directed by Son Pham.
Four performances of the show, which is Dragonfly Theater’s 4th production, are scheduled for October 18th, 19th (8 p.m.) and 26th, 27th (7 p.m.) at Q4 Event Space, 7 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, District 4.
“Dangerous Liaisons” is an R rated show with a recommendation that children under the age of 16 be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It is not suitable for young children.
