A police officer in the southern province of Dong Nai allegedly shot two colleagues Sunday afternoon, killing one.
Many of the details about the incident in Suoi Tre Commune remain sketchy.
Sources told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Captain Ngo Van Vinh shot Major Tran Ngoc Son in the head and chest following an argument at their local police station during which Son slammed Vinh’s head into a bedboard.
Senior Lieutenant Doan Thanh Phu was also shot when he tried to intervene, according to Tuoi Tre.
Vinh was eventually subdued by other officers.
He was also injured but Tuoi Tre said it was unclear how he had been hurt.
Sources told Thanh Nien that Son had been shot twice in the back and had suffered an aortic rupture, while Phu was shot once in his buttocks and once in the groin.
Vinh sustained an injury in his lower abdomen, according to the sources.
Meanwhile, Dat Viet and Nguoi Dua Tin newspapers reported that Son had two gunshot wounds in his chest and abdomen, while Phu was shot in the thigh and Vinh sustained injuries to his head.
News website VnExpress reported that Son had suffered two gunshots to his abdomen.
Son, Phu and Vinh were all rushed to Long Khanh General Hospital and Son died at 7:40 p.m.
Phu was transferred to Dong Nai General Hospital that evening due to blood loss and the severity of his wounds.
Doctors said Vinh would have to undergo surgery because his skull was cracked and his brain was swollen.
Before the incident, Captain Vinh was drinking with a colleague at a karaoke parlor near the Suoi Tre police station in Long Khanh Town, sources told Tuoi Tre.
The parlor's receptionist told Vinh that Son was drinking in the adjacent room, so he went to invite his boss for some beer.
He then quarreled with a person named Truc, who works at a garage in Dong Nai’s Bien Hoa Town, and Truc struck Vinh on the head with a glass. Vinh then went back to the station, according to the sources.
Colonel Nguyen Van Kim, deputy director of Dong Nai Police Department, told a press conference Monday morning that the station’s officers heard gunshots coming from the officers' lounge at around 6 p.m Sunday. When they came to see what was going on, they saw Son, Phu and Vinh all injured.
Kim said police would collect Vinh and Phu's testimony as they recover.
He said police will also probe gun management at the station and investigate whether or not the officers had any previous conflicts.
The Ministry of Public Security has also assigned investigators to Dong Nai to obtain information on the incident.
