Police in the south central province of Khanh Hoa arrested three Bulgarian men Sunday for withdrawing thousands of dollars from local ATMs with fake bankcards.
Korneev Valentin Nikolov, 53, Genov Aleksandar Simeonov, 44, and Dimitrov Iliyan Plamenov, 26, are being held on “thievery” charges.
Several days earlier, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV)’s branch in Nha Trang Town, the capital city of Khanh Hoa, reported to local police that security cameras at its ATM booths captured images of a group of foreigners installing devices to steal information from previously used bankcards, and later using replicas they made to illegally withdraw money.
The police caught the three men red-handed withdrawing the funds.
On Sunday evening, the police checked hotel rooms where the men were staying and found 214 fake bankcards and other devices, along with around US$18,000 in US dollars and Vietnam dong.
After being arrested, the men confessed to their crime. They said they had used eight fake ATM cards to withdraw a total VND111 million ($5,259) at ATM booths belonging to BIDV and Techcombank in Nha Trang.
