A Ho Chi Minh City appeals court Thursday upheld a seven-year sentence given to a doctor who killed two women and injured seven others in a hit-and-run accident two years ago.
Tran Anh Huy, 43, of Children’s Hospital No 1, crashed his Toyota Altis into two moving cars and then 13 motorbikes that had stopped at a red light.
He tried to flee the scene but was stopped by bystanders and taken to a nearby police station.
One woman died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Seven others were injured in the accident, which also caused losses of nearly VND100 million ($4,750), the prosecutors said.
Huy caused the accident because he had been speeding, the HCMC People’s Court agreed at a trial last June and sentenced him to seven years in jail.
He then appealed the verdict, asking for a reduction in the sentence.
A victim’s family also appealed, demanding a stiffer sentence.
