A group of ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet will dock at a Vietnamese port after voyaging to Australia, Russian news agency Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.
The group, which will include the Boris Butoma tanker and the SB-522 seafaring tugboat, will be led by the Varyag missile cruiser.
Preparations for the voyage are now under way at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy naval base, the Pacific Fleet press service has reported.
It will be the first visit by Pacific Fleet ships to Sydney. After the visit, Russian and Australian ships will take part in a joint exercise in the southern Pacific. The Pacific Fleet ships will then call at one of Vietnam’s ports.
The main purpose of the visit will be to strengthen naval cooperation between Australia and Vietnam, as well as to fly the Russian flag in the Asia Pacific region, according to the report.
