Police in Hanoi on Monday arrested a man carrying more than 1.6 kilograms of heroin on a motorbike taxi.
Vu Ngoc Dung, 46, who was riding pillion, said he bought the drugs in his nearby hometown of Hai Phong and planned to sell them in the capital city.
Dung said he hired Do Viet Toan, 32, a xe om (motorbike taxi) driver to drive him around.
In addition to the heroin, police seized VND10.6 million (US$506) from Dung’s suitcase.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
