Dong Thap are likely to be relegated to the second-flight First Division after a 1-3 home loss to Hanoi T&T at Cao Lanh Stadium in the 23rd round on Sunday.
It was the second consecutive home defeat after the Mekong Delta side lost 0-4 to Saigon Xuan Thanh of Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday July 21.
Dong Thap are now second to last after falling two positions when Khanh Hoa earned a 3-0 home win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai on Saturday and Kien Giang took a 2-1 home win over Da Nang on Sunday July 29.
Dong Thap now have 24 points while Khanh Hoa have 25 points and Kien Giang have 26 points. Of course, the race to avoid relegation is still a difficult one for Khanh Hoa and Kien Giang too as there are still three rounds to go this season.
“We understand our situation now, so we will strengthen our hands together. Though it is difficult, we will do our best for our survival," Dong Thap’s coach Tran Cong Minh said.
“Dong Thap players did not play very well the past few matches but it doesn’t mean we will be unable to get some points from the coming matches against Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Da Nang. I just hope that fair play will exist in the remaining rounds so that the real ability of each team can be reflected.”
In the upper part of the 14-team league, Hanoi T&T took the top spot with 45 points again after the win over Dong Thap, while Da Nang slid to second with 44 points after losing to Kien Giang.
