HCM eyes tough measures to ward off German measles epidemic
Health officials in Ho Chi Minh City are calling for tough measures to prevent a possible fresh outbreak of German measles in Vietnam’s southern hub.

Doctor Nguyen Van Chau, director of HCMC’s Cu Chi district health center, warned yesterday that the recently discovered cases of rubella – as the disease is also known – could spark a new epidemic.

Recently, 20 cases were recorded among workers of Sam Yang company in Cu Chi district.

In March last year, 1,243 people were infected in the city, and it took about a month to stamp out the outbreak.

Typically, the disease spreads rapidly in crowded places like companies and factories where appropriate preventive methods are rarely adopted.

In a few days’ time, the Cu Chi health center will coordinate with the district’s Labour Federation to work out measures to prevent rubella.
