The ministry also requested that importers and distributors of the vaccine, as well as clinics and hospitals that administer it, report on their activities every six months.
Gardasil, produced by Merk & Co., Inc., is a recombinant vaccine for preventing cancer in girls and women aged over 10 who contract certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccinations include three shots, each costing around US$100.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil for general use in 2006 after extensive clinical trials.
Cervical cancer kills more than 270,000 women annually and some 493,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; more than 80 percent of them in developing nations.
In Vietnam, the incidence of cervical cancer is 20 out of every 100,000 women, 11 of whom die.
