A 53-year-old man shocked his family in southern Vietnam late last month when they found that he was still alive during his own funeral.
Nguyen Van Dao was rushed to Long An Province’s General Hospital on February 22 after having a stroke in the same morning.
Doctors said that the man slipped into brain death and they discharged him the same night, asking his family to prepare for his funeral.
Once the family had finished all the preparations, they removed Dao from ventilator support the next day and then started funeral rituals.
But there was a little surprise waiting for them.
When Nguyen Tan Loc, a family friend, came closer to take a final look at Dao before his body was put into a coffin for the wake, he found that the body was still warm.
Loc asked the family to take him back to hospital.
Doctors at a military hospital declared that he was not dead. He was only in a coma after the stroke but suffered from severe exhaustion due to the two-day starvation period.
Dao regained his consciousness after spending one day in the hospital. He has been discharged in stable condition and is now recovering.
