Police and agriculture officials in the northern province of Hai Duong Thursday found an animal feed producer storing 14 kilograms of carcinogenic coloring.
The inspection found that Truong Phu company has been mixing the gold coloring with feed meant for cattle and other livestock to give them an “eye-catching” color.
Officials said chickens eating the feed would have gold-colored skin, which many Vietnamese prefer believing the meat to taste better than from chickens with white skin.
Officials have sealed a bag with the chemical, which is used as a paint and industrial dye, and taken samples of the company’s products for testing.
They are also set to issue orders to the company to remove its products off the market.
Pham Tien Dung, a senior inspector in the agriculture ministry, said the chemical is carcinogenic.
“Using it in animal feed production is unethical.”
