Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City have operated on a baby that was born without sexual organs and a severe hernia that caused its intestines to protrude outside his body.

News website VnExpress reported that the baby had both intestines and urinary bladder hanging out of his stomach when it was brought from Long An General Hospital in the Mekong Delta to Children's Hospital No.1 in HCMC.

Dr Dao Trung Hieu, deputy director of the pediatric hospital, said the baby suffers from ventral and umbilical hernias, which is not a rare condition, but protrusion of the intestines is rare.

The exposed organs have been put inside and the baby has been given urinary and anal sphincter implantations.

Doctors said the baby is stable and there are no signs of infection.

They will perform some tests to identify the baby's gender as it has neither ovary and uterus nor penis and testicles.

The mother said she had received regular examinations during pregnancy, but was never told the baby had any deformities.

She delivered prematurely -- in the 32nd week -- and was only then told by doctors.
