A 58-year-old man in the Mekong Delta Province of Hau Giang has become the 11th person to die from influenza A/H1N1, better known as swine flu, in Vietnam this year.

Ly Van Thanh, who hailed from Long My District, had a headache, cough, and high fever on June 18, said Dr. Tran Phong Nha, director of Long My Preventive Health Center.

He had received treatment at a private clinic for about one week before being transferred to Long My District General Hospital.

Thanh was later transferred to Military Health Hospital 121 in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho, where he died on June 27, according to Nha.

After that the Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, which conducted postmortem tests, confirmed that he had been infected with the A/H1N1 strain of swine flu.

Six of Thanh's family members been isolated and are being tested for swine flu, while local health authorities have sterilized the environment around his house, online newspaper VnExpress reported.

Meanwhile, authorities in Ca Mau Province, also in the Mekong Delta, reported that three people recently tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

Le Hoang Be, director of the province's Department of Interior, was among the patients, VnExpress reported.

In response to the reports, Ca Mau health authorities convened an emergency meeting with local health clinics' representatives on Friday to discuss measures aimed at preventing the spread of swine flu.

Vietnam reported its first H1N1 death of the year in April. Most of the cases came from the Mekong Delta and HCMC.

More than 11,200 people in the country have become infected with H1N1 since it broke out worldwide in 2009. The virus claimed 70 lives by the end of 2011 before easing last year.
