Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City said a man apparently struck by lightning in southern Vietnam last weekend is in critical condition.
Doan Van Hung, 45, was admitted into Cho Ray, the leading trauma hospital in the city, on Sunday afternoon with severe burns all over his body.
Hung’s son Doan Anh Dung, 14, said that he and his father went fishing at a pond in Binh Duong Province around noon.
At 3 p.m., while Hung was talking to a friend over the phone, lightning struck, followed by an explosion.
The son turned around and found his father already severely burnt. He then called for help.
Dung said that they were standing around five meters from a utility pole and it had just stopped raining.
“His whole body tuned black and his cellphone exploded,” Dung said.
Doctor Huynh Ba Long said that the victim stopped breathing twice during his three days at the hospital.
“We believe that the lightning may have struck the utility pole first and the victim was indirectly hit,” he said.
Long added that no one should stay near overhead power lines or high trees while it is raining.
