An was born normal developed a small tumor over her right eye when she turned seven months old.

The tumor grew rapidly, deforming her nose, lips, and eyes and gradually covering half her face.

However, the tumor grew once again, she underwent another surgery the following year, and it returned yet again.

An received support from Vovicare, a charity run by ethnic Vietnamese living in Australia and Canada-based Virtual Medical Miracle Network, which connected her with McKinnon.

An's latest surgery was funded by the FV Hospital, while McKinnon performed the surgery for free.
