Hanoi police on Friday morning seized 2.3 tons of chicken brought from the Chinese border without clear origins or health quarantine certificates.

The chicken were on their way from Mong Cai border gate in Quang Ninh Province to Hanoi. Many birds were weak and sick, the police and market management officers found.

Pham Duc Nen from Hai Phong had bought the chicken. Nen hired Vu Dinh Vinh from nearby Hai Duong Province to drive them.

The chickens have been given to Hanoi's animal health officials for disposal.

Two deaths relating to bird flu have been reported so far this year - a 38-year-old woman from the Mekong Delta's Tien Giang Province in February and a 3-year-old girl in Ho Chi Minh City in March.
