Doctors at the Ho Chi Minh City Children Hospital 1 removed a fist-sized hairball from the stomach of a ten-year-old girl from Soc Trang Province last week.
The child's father, Hoa, said he brought her to the hospital to be examined because she had grown thin, pale and lost her appetite.
Doctor Dao Trung Hieu, the hospital deputy director, told VnExpress the patient was admitted suffering from malnutrition and abdominal pains.
"An ultrasound scan found a large object in her stomach. Subsequent surgery revealed it to be a mass of hair," he said, adding that the girl has recovered from her treatment nicely.
Hoa said his daughter had a habit of pulling strands of her hair out of her head and eating them while watching television.
He said the family was aware of her habit but they didn't tell her to stop because they believed it to be harmless.
Dr Hieu said this was the second time the hospital conducted a surgery to remove a hairball from a patient's stomach.
