A patient suffering depression in north central Vietnam had his condition worsen during the heat wave and hanged himself at home Thursday.
The family of 35-year-old Pham The Vu in Nghe An Province said the man's depression always became severe when the weather became too hot. The mercury had risen to 41 degrees Celsius in the province on Thursday.
News website VnExpress cited doctors at the Nghe An Mental Disease Hospital as saying that the neurological systems of depression patients, like other mental patients, would get easily irritated by hot weather, worsening their condition.
They said the hospital receives more patients on summer days, most of whom do not have good caretakers to protect them from the impacts of the hot weather, including taking them to air conditioned spaces, giving them more baths and keeping them away from noise and crowds.
Tran Thai Coi, a hospital official, said more than 300 patients are being treated at the hospital and 100 others were brought every day for examinations.
Nurse Nguyen Xuan Viet said most of the 40 or so female in-patients were at the hospital because of the weather.
"Sunny season is mental season," he said.
