An appeals court in Ho Chi Minh City Wednesday upheld a cash penalty of VND220 million (US$10,560) against a plastic surgeon who damaged a customer's breasts in several operations.

Lisa Nguyen, a Vietnamese American, filed a lawsuit in 2008 after doctor Lai Cong Hiep refused to give her $25,000 in compensation he had agreed to after damaging her breasts in a plastic surgery operation.

Nguyen learned about Hiep, director of Viet My private plastic surgery institute in Ho Chi Minh City, through the Internet and visited his office after she was not satisfied with the results of three operations in the US and one in the central town of Quy Nhon.

They agreed on a $2,200 deal and an operation was conducted in February 2008. But one nipple was swollen several days later, and the incision point at one breast opened, exposing the silicon bag.

It was sealed later but the other incision soon opened up again as well and it became infected.

Nguyen stayed at the clinic for a month of treatments which ultimately left her with flat breasts, multiple scars on those breasts, and only one nipple.

Her lawsuit demanded VND330 million ($15,840) in compensation.
