A three-year-old boy has recovered after a 10-hour surgery in a Hanoi hospital to replant his right foot that was cut off in a boat accident in the northern province of Thai Binh.
Dr Dao Van Giang of the Viet Duc Hospital, who operated on Nguyen Van Dan on August 21, told Thanh Nien it was a "difficult" operation since Dan had been brought to the hospital 10 hours after the accident and he was very young.
But his foot is showing signs of "living," he said, adding that the boy has been discharged and would return in two weeks for physical therapy to restore the foot's functions.
Dan's family lives on a boat, so they tie him to the boat's side so that he does not fall into the river.
On the day of the accident the rope was too long, got stuck in the boat's engine when it began to move and became too taut, and sliced off the boy's foot.
The foot was only recovered from the river an hour after the accident.
