A US-supported network to promote Vietnam's response to animal diseases that could affect human health launched its first meeting at a Hanoi school on Tuesday.

Vietnam One Health University Network, which met at the Hanoi School of Public Health, was supported by a pandemic threat project of the US Agency for International Development, the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City said in a press release.

The One Health approach recognizes a strong link between human health, animal health and ecosystem health. It emphasizes the need for collaboration among concerned sectors to achieve a fast and effective response to any health threats.

The Vietnamese network is one of the first steps in establishing a Southeast Asia network, which will be an organization of universities seeking to increase regional coordination in response to disease outbreaks.

It plans to register 18 universities of medicine, public health and veterinary medicine.

The Hanoi School of Public Health, Hanoi Medical University and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Hanoi University of Agriculture will act as the focal institutions.
