Doctors in the southern city of Can Tho have removed a surgical suture needle from a man's intestine which was allegedly left there by a surgeon 15 years ago.
La Van Phu, the head surgeon of Can Tho General Hospital, on Monday said that his patient, 52, is recovering from a two-hour procedure.
The man, identified as Nguyen, was admitted with severe abdominal pain.
An X-ray scan later found the surgical needle inside his intestine. Doctors then successfully removed the object.
Nguyen recalled that his last surgical procedure was an appendectomy in 2001 at another hospital in the city.
In 2014 he was admitted to a local hospital in Vinh Long Province, also in the Mekong Delta, with serious abdominal pain. But he was soon discharged even after doctors there detected the needle, the man said.
