Pharyngitis is sore throat caused by inflammation of the throat. It is one of the most common reasons why people go to see doctors.
In Ho Chi Minh City, people often suffer from a sore throat because of changes in the weather and the pollution.
Usually a sore throat signals another illness like a cold or the flu. Sore throats can be very painful and are sometimes accompanied by other symptoms like fever, nausea, and aches and pains.
Herbalists Quoc Trung and Hoai Vu recommend that you avoid drinking cold water, brush your teeth after every meal, stay away from dusty areas or wear a mask. When you start to feel a sore throat coming, boil some water and mix it with salt to gargle four times a day. Don't sleep with the fan blowing directly toward you and don't stay up too late. In addition, make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid smoking.
If the sore throat develops regardless, herbalist Quoc Trung recommends the following treatments:
* To relieve acute pharyngitis along with a red and violent throat, a fever and headache:
Wash 8g nhọ nồi (commonly known as false daisy or eclipta alba), 8g xạ can (scientific name: rhizoma belamcandae), 8g tang bạch bì (pharmaceutical name: cortex mori albae radicis), 12g cát cánh (scientific name: radix platycodi grandiflori), 12g huyền sâm (figwort or scientific name: radix scrophulariae), 12g sinh địa (scientific name: rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) Libosch), 12g ngưu bàng (scientific name: arctium lappa linn or fructus arctii), 12g bạch cương tằm (pharmaceutical name: bombyx batryticatus), 9g bạc hà (mint), 16g kinh giá»›i (Vietnamese lemon mint) and 16g kim ngân hoa (Japanese honeysuckle or lonicera japonica) and place in an earthen pot. Pour three bowls of water into the pot and simmer for two hours until two thirds of the water has evaporated. Pour the herbal water into a big bowl. Then, pour another three bowls of water into the pot and let it simmer until there is approximately half a bowl of water. Pour the water into the bowl with the herbal water and mix. Drink the concoction three times a day after meals. Do this every day for ten consecutive days.
- To treat chronic pharyngitis
Wash 16g khoản Ä‘ông hoa (scientific name: flos tussilaginis farfarae), 16g bối mẫu (scientific name: fritillaria roylel hook), 16g sa sâm (scientific name: glehnia liloralis F.S), 16g sinh địa (scientific name: rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) Libosch), 12g mạch môn (scientific name: radix ophiopogonis japonici), 12g thạch há»™c (scientific name: Dendroblum sp), 12g xạ can (scientific name: rhizoma belamcandae), 12g huyền sâm (scientific name: radix scrophulariae), 8g cam thảo (scientific name: glycyrrhiza uralensis fisch), 10g cát cánh (scientific name: radix platycodi grandiflori) in water and place in an earthen pot. Note that you should ground the bối mẫu into a powder. Do the same as above.
Alternatively, herbalist Hoai Vu recommends two more treatments. Try the following simple remedies:
* Wash 50g rau cần (fresh water dropwort), grind it and squeeze the juice into a glass. Add a pinch of salt and stir. Hold the herbal water in your mouth for a while and swallow. You should do this for several days until the soreness is relieved.
* Wash 500g pear, peel and throw away the seeds. Cut the pear and put in a blender. Pour the pear juice into a glass and mix with 100g honey. Drink 100g of the juice three times a day.
If the above remedies do not work and symptoms continue, see your doctor.
