People suffering from fatty liver disease can greatly improve their condition through some key remedies like eating healthy food and living a healthy lifestyle, herbalist Hoai Vu says.

The disease is generally caused by a very rich diet, he says, but a poor diet is also a major cause.

An empty stomach may be an obstacle for the processing of substances in the liver. Dieting to lose weight is a likely cause for fatty liver, with around 20 percent of patients contracting the disease because of this.

Studies have shown that a lack of necessary nutrients will affect the synthesis of albumin and phosphorus, causing a lack of lipoprotein. Also, there is an increase in the production of the hormone glucocorticoid, causing a large amount of fat to be produced and released into the blood, more than can be carried by lipoprotein, and this is stored in the liver, resulting in a fatty liver.

Prevention and treatment

People with FLD should not eat animal fat and organs. Animal fat contains a lot of saturated fatty acid. Animal organs contain a lot of triglyceride and cholesterol which cause FLD.

It is inadvisable to drink alcohol. Most alcohol addicts or those who drink a lot of alcohol suffer from FLD. Over a period of time, they are at high risk of cirrhosis or even liver cancer. People with FLD should not smoke either because cigarettes contain thousands of harmful substances which can damage different internal organs, including the liver.

The liver's function is to discharge waste or toxic substances. When it becomes fatty, it cannot function properly and nicotine in the cigarette smoke will be stored in the body, doing great harm.

But it is also inadvisable to take too much of what is called liver-protection medicine.

The liver is the organ that does most of the metabolism and processes the most substances. Thus taking too much medicine just overloads the liver.

Additionally, it is necessary to have sufficient sleep, rest, and relaxation to avoid exhaustion, reducing the release of glucoza, protein, and lactic acid, thereby reducing the workload on the liver.

Rest helps increase the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the liver, inproving the recovery of liver cells.

Food and drink have a significant impact. People with FLD should cook artichoke leaves or flowers with soft pig ribs or knuckles.

They should eat corn, celery, shiitake mushroom, carrot, tomato, cucumber, mustard green, chrysanthemum coronarium, water morning glory, and luffa.

Corn contains a lot of unsaturated acid which can improve the processing of fat in general and cholesterol in particular.

Celery contains a lot of vitamins that produce a cooling effect on the liver, reduce cholesterol in the blood, increase the release of waste, and clean the blood.

Shiitake mushrooms contain a lot of substances that can reduce cholesterol in the blood and liver cells.

Leaves like mustard green, chrysanthemum coronarium, and water morning glory can help release heat from the liver while vegetables like carrot, tomato, cucumber, and luffa release heat and are diuretic.

Oil made from peanut, sesame, and soybean has a high unsaturated acid content which can help reduce cholesterol in the blood. Food made from soybeans, green beans, and black beans is also good for people with FLD.

Silkworm pupae help improve digestion, reduce cholesterol in the blood, and improve the functioning of the liver. They are used in cooking or made into powder to take as medicine.

Wolfberry can help prevent fat deposits in the liver and improve the growth of liver cells and metabolism of fat.

Different kinds of tea can help too. Twenty grams of lotus leaves, 10g of multiflorous knotweed, and 15g of cassia legumes should be washed and boiled in a liter of water to make tea. Similarly 10g of hawthorn berries, 5g of dried tangerine skin, and 10g of citrus wilsonii tanaka are boiled to make tea.

Tea leaves not only reduce fat and cholesterol but also increase the elasticity of the walls of the blood vessels and prevent fat from being deposited in the liver.

Lotus leaves also reduce fat and prevent it from being deposited in liver cells. Lotus leaves can be cut into small pieces to make tea or be cooked with rice gruel.

Three grams of dry tea and 15g of mad-dog weed are put in a pot of boiling water for about 20 minutes before drinking. It protects the liver, eradicates fat, and is a diuretic.

Two grams of dry tea, 10g of turmeric, and 5g of liquorice root, or alternatively 3g of tea, 10g of sliced pueraria lobata roots, and 20g of lotus leaves are put in a pot of boiling water for a while before drinking.

It can remove toxic substances and reduce fat in the blood. It is also possible to just chop up fresh or dry lotus leaves and put in boiling water to make tea. It is good to drink this daily.

It should be noted that spicy or pungent substances like ginger, garlic, chili, pepper, alcohol, coffee, and strong tea are not good for people with FLD.
