Tien Giang authorities in southern Vietnam Wednesday asked local heath officials to investigate a surgery in which a gauze was forgotten inside a patient.
The gauze was found and removed after an ultra sound scan at the Tien Giang Ob-Gyn Hospital on May 15.
Luu Thi Cam, 32, had suffered prolonged fever after an operation she had on May 9 to stop her from bleeding from a C-section she had undergone at another hospital.
The gauze was forgotten by Vu Mai Hong, a doctor who reached his retirement age three years ago but has been kept on by the hospital and assigned a number of surgeries each day.
Hong had removed the woman's uterus to stop the bleeding. He was also asked to conduct the operation to remove the gauze.
The province statement mentions no details of the C-section, and no conclusions over the need of the uterus removal, which has been done once in a while across Vietnam during the delivery of hemophiliacs.
