A newborn in southern Vietnam died hours after he was given a hepatitis B vaccination shot, but doctors confirmed on Tuesday the vaccine was fine.
The boy was born at Ba Ria Hospital in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province on April 21 and was given the injection the morning after.
He cried for hours and died that same night, news website VnExpress reported.
Pham Minh An, director of Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s health department, said Tuesday its tests found a high white blood cell count.
“So he might have died of blood poisoning. We are waiting for postmortem results from the police to know for sure.”
An said 18 other babies received the vaccine from the same batch and they are all fine.
The boy’s family meanwhile criticized the hospital staff for their negligence.
They said they repeatedly consulted nurses in charge as the boy kept crying after the shot.
But the nurses said there was nothing wrong, that all babies cry a lot after vaccine injections.
