Surgeons in the central province of Thanh Hoa reported Saturday they had successfully removed a 10-centimeter leech from a 12-year-old girl’s bronchial tube a day earlier.

According to doctors at Hop Luc General Hospital, the leech had been living in Nguyen Thi Huong, from the mountainous district of Thuong Xuan, for “a long time.” It would have killed if taken out much later, they said.

Huong’s family said Huong’s throat began hurting around two months ago. They said she sometimes had coughing fits and spit up blood.

Several health clinics diagnosed her with tonsillitis.

Huong showed no signs of recovery after tonsillitis treatment and her family then took her to Hop Luc hospital on Thursday where doctors found the creature in her bronchial tube.

The girl is now recovering well from the surgery, doctors said.

Experts supposed the leech entered Huong’s bronchial tube when she drank water directly from a river or stream.
