Having low blood pressure a condition known as hypotension may cause symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, uneasiness and paleness.

Associate Prof. Nguyen Hoai Nam said hypotension can be caused by other chronic diseases like bronchitis, liver fibrosis, heart failure, cancer and diabetes.

Several symptoms may sometimes appear at the same time (in acute low blood pressure), causing extreme fatigue and exhaustion in the patient. More often than not, the patient requires hospitalization. But patients with chronic hypotension sometimes feel just a little dizzy or uneasy and at times their vision might blur for a little while.

"It is not hard to see the symptoms [of hypotension]," said Nam. "Patients can't see them easily and tell physicians."

He also said that the patient's blood pressure must be measures while he or she is in the lying down position

"It is significant to note that the symptoms of hypotension can be similar to other ailments so it is necessary to measure the blood pressure."

The World Health Organization defines hypotension as having a systolic (maximum) blood pressure lower than 90 mmHg and a diastolic (minimum) blood pressure lower than 60 mmHg.

The WHO does not see hypotension as a sign of heart injury.

According to Dr Nam, there are several causes of low blood pressure, but the causes are not clear in some cases. He said people with hypotension are usually thin and pale, and most of them are young girls who are highly sensitive to stress.

Hypotension may be the result of an acute dehydration, which causes ailments like diarrhea and vomiting. Some people suffer hypotension when they sit up quickly after lying down, or stand up quickly after sitting. It usually happens in the early morning and there is no clear cause.

Patients have blurred vision, feel dizzy, their heart thumps and they sweat a lot. Those symptoms last for just a few minutes.

Without a careful examination and good advice from doctors, patients with such symptoms may become very worried. They may visit several doctors but it is hard to diagnose the disease because their blood pressure can be quite normal for the duration of a visit to a doctor.

Dr Nam suggests that people who might have hypotension should make sure they eat enough food. People, especially young girls trying to lose weight, should not eat too little.

People diagnosed with hypotension without a clear cause should exercise or practice yoga and should not drink alcohol.

According to (, people with hypotension should eat more salt than people with normal blood pressure. However, if you have a heart problem, you should consult your physician.

People with hypotension are also advised to drink more water (about 10 glasses a day). Also they should drink water containing sodium and potassium, especially after physical exercise and on hot summer days.

Regular physical exercise also helps the regular flow of blood in the body, reducing hypotension. Walking, swimming, jogging, working out to rhythmic music and playing badminton can help a lot.

Also, while lying down, people with hypotension should take several deep breaths before sitting up and walking. It helps increase blood flows to different parts of the body, getting it ready.

They should eat food rich in carbohydrate like potatoes, rice and bread. They should not eat or drink anything with diuretic effects. They should eat watery fruit, chicken and fish, and also shouldn't take alcoholic drinks, which cause dehydration. Drinks like strong tea, coffee and grape juice are very good for people with hypotension.

M.D Dang Quoc Bao said people should eat three to four meals at regular hours every day. They should not miss meals often and should never eat too little to lose weight quickly.

If hypotension is caused by lack of blood (often found in women), it is advisable to eat food with a high iron content like lean meat, animal liver, má»™c nhĩ (Jew's Ear), nấm hương khô (dried shiitake), celery, rau Ä‘ay (tossa jute), rau dền (spiny amaranth), pomegranate and jujube.

Dr Bao also suggests doing regular physical exercise like walking and jogging, but he advises people not to do exercise after a meal or while hungry.
