A 39-year-old man in Hue City on Friday became the first in Vietnam to have a heart pump surgically implanted inside his chest.
Hoang Quoc B. received a HeartWare pump, a ventricular assist device (VAD) which took over the pumping function of his heart.
Prof Bui Duc Phu, director of Hue Central Hospital, said doctors performed the five-hour implant surgery with the assistance of doctors from Saint Vincent Hospital, Australia.
He said the heart has functioned well, doubling cardiac output to four liters per minute compared with before the surgery.
The patient was in final stage of dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively, leading to heart failure.
According to Dr. Phu said the HeartWare pump can give advanced heart failure patients more time to wait before a matching donor becomes available.
He said better heart condition also gives the patient a higher chance to receive lung transplant.
