A six-year-old student died and another six were critically injured when a swarm of hornets (vespa affinis) attacked a class in the northern province of Lao Cai Saturday.

The hornets left their nest in a tree adjacent to the Ta Tong Sanh Hamlet's school and suddenly attacked a group of 19 teachers, students and parents at around 10 a.m., witnesses said.

Chao Lao Lo, a child member of the Dao ethnic minority, died later the same day. The other victims were gradually recovering.

Following the incident, locals set fire to the hornets' nest, which weighed approximately four kilograms.

Chao To Kinh, chief of Ta Tong Sanh hamlet, said the insects, known locally as "monster face hornets", are common in highlands areas and are known to be very ferocious.
