Four people were hospitalized in southern Vietnam on Tuesday after finishing 10 liters of rice wine at a family party.

The four men are relatives from An Giang Province, ranged from 44 to 62 years of age. After they fell unconscious from drinking, they were sent to a hospital and assisted with respirators.

Nguyen Van Men, 62, was rushed to the hospital after he came home from the party and slept for more than two hours. His face was pale and he did not make a single movement, his wife said.

Eyewitnesses at the party said the four had challenged each other in a drinking competition. They left after finishing about 10 liters, and all developed similar problems.

The four victims raised the number of people hospitalized after drinking rice wine in An Giang to 62 in a month. A 27-year-old man and another 43 years old died after a wedding party.

Local health officers said the wine at the wedding party had an excessive methanol content.

No investigations have been reported about the latest case, but authorities are worried that more incidents will occur, as the country's biggest holiday, the Lunar New Year festival, will be held in two months.
