More than 400 people in the central highlands province of Gia Lai fell sick with food poisoning on Monday after attending a traditional gathering of ethnic minorities, a local health official said.

According to Krong Pa District's authorities, the exact cause of the poisoning is unknown but initial tests showed that the quality of the water from sources at Ma Jai Village, where the gathering was held that day, was not guaranteed.

Another possible explanation is that the food used at the gathering had gone off due to the hot weather conditions, authorities added.

As of Tuesday, patients that had recovered were being discharged, Dinh Viet Buu, director of Krong Pa District's health center, said.
