Nearly 1,700 food producers and traders in Ho Chi Minh City were fined more than VND8.6 billion (US$455,400) last year for food safety violations, health inspectors said last week.
Of nearly 18,000 food producers, processors and traders inspected, 3,840 were found violating food safety and hygiene regulations.
The inspectors suspended 239 and transferred six to the city police for further investigation.
The inspectors also visited 8,044 medical establishments last year, including hospitals, clinics, drugstores and traditional medicine clinics, and suspended 259 for hygiene violations. Another 1,080 were fined a total of more than VND4.8 billion ($254,200).
