Fighting a summer cold

A cold in the summer is usually caused by a combination of heat and humidity, says traditional medicine doctor Vu Quoc Trung.

Sometimes, the cold gets worse and develops into a fever. The symptoms are many. The patient has high body temperature, is a little sweaty, feels lethargic and heavy, there is tiredness in the arms and legs, there is a hot feeling in the chest, a parched feeling and difficulty in passing urine.

Trung says it is necessary, in such instances, to treat the high body temperature and humidity using some medicine and specific kinds of food to treat the cold.

He suggests some of the following remedies to treat the summer cold and its symptoms.

Lotus tea

Ingredients: fresh lotus leaves: about 30-40 grams, fresh hoắc hương (pogostemon cablin) leaves: about 12g, a teaspoonful or two of sugar.

Wash the hoắc hương leaves, chop the lotus leaves and put both of them into a teapot. Pour boiling water and cover the pot for about 5-10 minutes. Remove the leaves, add some sugar to the tea and drink at least four to five times a day. This drink helps reduce the body heat.

Green bean tea

Ingredients: 100g green beans, 12g fresh hoắc hương (pogostemon cablin), some white sugar.

Wash the green beans and hoắc hương. Chop up the leaves. Put the green beans into a pot with 1 liter of water, cook on a high flame. Add chopped up hoắc hương when the water boils and cook for a few more minutes. Strain, add some water to the fluid and drink during the day. It has a cooling effect during hot weather.

Green bean gruel

Ingredients: some green beans, 15g of fresh hoắc hương, some rice.

Wash the green beans and boil it till its hard skin peels off, add rice and cook until the grains get soft. Chop up hoắc hương and add to the gruel, add some salt and sugar and have it for breakfast or dinner.

Watermelon skin tea

Ingredients: 100-150g of green watermelon skin, 12g of tía tô (folium perillae) leaves, some white sugar.

Wash the tía tô leaves and watermelon skin, cut the watermelon skin into small pieces. Put the watermelon skin in a pot with a liter or two of water and boil it for 15-20 minutes before adding the tía tô leaves and cook for a few more minutes. Strain and get the water. Add some sugar and drink. It has a cooling and cleansing effect on the body.

In general, it is necessary to eat enough, drink enough and supply the body with enough fluids. It is also not advisable not to go out in the scorching sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Trung says.
