Cancer claims 82,000 lives in 116,000 cases in Vietnam each year, according to statistics from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which are quoted at a Sunday conference.

The Vietnam Nutrition Association (VINUTAS) said early detection and diagnosis can raise the success rate of treatment to 90 percent for prostate cancer, 80-90 percent for breast cancer, and 65-70 percent for cervical cancer.

Dr Bui Chi Viet of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital told the conference that between 58 percent and 80 percent of cancer patients lose weight. A reduction of just five-percent in weight can badly effect the life expectancy of cancer patients, Viet said.

Therefore, cancer patients should be fed with nutritious food to keep their weight, he said.
