American plastic surgeon McKay McKinnon removed several tumors in the legs of a young Vietnamese woman in Ho Chi Minh City last weekend.
Tran Thi My Son, 20, flew from the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to the southern city for the 4.5-hour procedure.
Son has been in a wheelchair for most of her life. Doctors said the tumors kept growing, making up more than two-thirds of her 70-kilogram weight.
The US surgeon said her health was not stable for a more complicated procedure so he could only remove several tumors in her legs and her left hip.
He said he and a surgical team from FV Hospital will wait until next year to remove the remaining tumors.
McKay McKinnon, who has worked for free to remove giant tumors from body parts of many patients around Vietnam since 2012, earlier on Thursday and Friday helped remove tumors from the faces of three other patients aging from 18-26.
